Your DJ sets the tone for your entire reception. Ask the wrong questions — or none at all — and you might end up with someone who’s technically available on your date but has no idea how to read a room. Here’s what actually matters.

I’ve been working with DJs for over ten years, and I can tell you with confidence: the DJ you choose will have more impact on how your guests feel about your reception than almost any other decision you make. The flowers are beautiful. The venue is stunning. But at the end of the night, when your aunt is on the dance floor next to your college friends and your grandparents are clapping along to a song they actually recognize? That’s the DJ.

So before you sign anything, here are the ten questions I’d want every couple to ask — and honestly, what a good answer looks like for each one.

Can I request a specific DJ, and will they actually be the one who shows up?

This is the first question, and it’s worth understanding how it really works — because the answer isn’t as simple as “yes” or “no” with most companies. Some DJ companies book you with a name and a photo, then send whoever is available that day, with no say from you at all. Ask directly: can I request someone, and what happens if that person becomes unavailable?

How do you handle song requests — from us and from guests?

There’s a big difference between a DJ who takes requests and a DJ who manages requests. You want someone who knows how to honor a guest’s request without tanking the energy on the dance floor — because not every request is a good idea at 9pm when the room is packed. Ask how they balance your must-plays, your do-not-plays, and whatever the uncle with the microphone is about to suggest.

Reading a room — feeling when the energy is about to drop, knowing which song pulls a specific demographic back to the floor, understanding when to slow it down and when to push — that’s a skill you can’t fake. Ask them to walk you through what they actually do when things go quiet.

What happens if you get sick or have an emergency on our wedding day?

Nobody wants to think about this, but you should. A solo DJ with no backup network is a real risk. If they’re sick, injured, or dealing with an emergency — you’re out of luck. Ask specifically what their contingency plan is and whether they have other DJs they can call on.
